Rada Samorządu Studentów Międzywydziałowych Indywidualnych Studiów Humanistycznych na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim wraz z Kołem Naukowym MISH UJ oraz Redakcją “Artes” mają przyjemność zaprosić do udziału w Ogólnopolskiej Studencko-Doktoranckiej Konferencji Naukowej “Zachód oczami Wschodu”, która odbędzie się stacjonarnie 17 maja 2024 na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim.

Celem konferencji jest pobudzenie do refleksji nad sposobami obrazowania Zachodu z perspektywy szeroko pojętego Wschodu. W tym kontekście Wschód może obejmować Europę Wschodnią, cywilizację prawosławną oraz obszary bliskowschodnie. Konferencja ma za zadanie skłonienie do namysłu nad tymi dwiema kategoriami poznawczymi i poszerzenie dyskusji na temat narracji o “peryferiach” Europy. Zapraszamy do udziału studentów, doktorantów i badaczy reprezentujących różne dziedziny (literaturoznawstwo, historię idei, filozofię, kulturoznawstwo, porównawcze badania cywilizacyjne, stosunki międzynarodowe, geopolitykę, badania postkolonialne).

– dyskursy filozoficzne krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej oraz ich relacje z tradycjami zachodnimi,
– czym są Kresy? genealogia pojęcia, jego względności, polityczne oraz literackie konteksty, nowe próby ujęcia problematyki,
– polskie spojrzenia na Zachód w czasach Żelaznej Kurtyny – lęk czy fascynacja?
– nowe formuły zbliżenia i wrogości wobec Zachodu po roku 1989,
– problematyka resentymentu w postrzeganiu Zachodu przez Wschód,
– znaczenie wojny w Ukrainie w kształtowaniu się wyobrażeń na temat Zachodu.
– awangardy artystyczne Europy Wschodniej i ich stosunek do ruchów zachodnich,
– „Niesamowita Słowiańszczyzna”, „Mitteleuropa” oraz inne projekty geopolityczne i kulturowe,
– status i strategie wschodnioeuropejskiego badacza/intelektualisty na zachodnim uniwersytecie (np. Julia Kristeva, Slavoj Žižek, Mircea Eliade).

Zapraszamy serdecznie wszystkich zainteresowanych do udziału w Konferencji MISH UJ “Zachód oczami Wschodu”. Wydarzenie ma pełnić funkcję forum służącego akademickiej wymianie refleksji nad tematyką szeroko rozumianego Zachodu.
Nie obowiązuje opłata konferencyjna. Czas wystąpienia to 15 minut. Konferencja odbędzie się stacjonarnie, nie ma możliwości udziału w trybie zdalnym. Dla najlepszych prezentacji przewidywana jest publikacja pokonferencyjna w Czasopiśmie “Artes”. Conference Call “West through the eyes of East” (Zachód oczami Wschodu)

We are pleased to announce the launch of a call for papers for the Conference “West through the eyes of East” which will take place on 17th of May 2024. The abstract submissions will be open until 24th of March 2024.

About the Conference:
"West through the eyes of East" is an interdisciplinary conference organized at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków by the Student Council and the Student Research Club of the Department of the Interfaculty Individual Studies in the Humanities (MISH).
The conference aims at reflection on the West from the perspective of the broadly defined East, which may include e.g. Eastern Europe, the Orthodox civilization, and the Middle East. The conference seeks to examine these two cognitive categories and expand the discussion on the narratives about the ‘peripheries’ of Europe.
We invite students, doctoral candidates, and researchers from various fields (intellectual history, philosophy, cultural studies, comparative studies of civilisation, international relations, geopolitics, postcolonial studies) to participate.

Suggested Research Areas:
– imaginary of the East and the West in the perspective of imaginative geographies,
– who is an Eastern European? Narratives about identities in Eastern Europe,
– the West in emigration relations from the 19th to the 21st century,
– borders and peripheries in relation to the center,
– orientalism and Occidentalism in imaginative geographies,
– phantasms of geopolitical blocks,
– critique of the industrial/capitalist society in the works of the authors writing in Eastern Slavic languages,
– philosophical discourses of countries in Central and Eastern Europe and their relations with the Western traditions,
– what are the "Kresy"? Genealogy of the concept, its relativities, political and literary contexts, and new attempts to address the issue,
– Polish perspectives on the West during the Iron Curtain era – fear or fascination?
– new formulas of closeness and hostility towards the West after 1989,
– the significance of the war in Ukraine in shaping perceptions of the West,
– artistic avant-gardes of Eastern Europe and their relationship to the Western movements,
– "Incredible Slavdom," "Mitteleuropa," and other geopolitical and cultural projects,
– status and strategies of the Eastern European researchers/intellectuals at Western universities (e.g. Julia Kristeva, Slavoj Žižek, Mircea Eliade).

We cordially invite all interested individuals to participate in the MISH UJ Conference "West through the Eyes of East". The event is intended to function as a platform for the exchange of academic reflection on the perspectives on the West. We do not charge a conference fee. The presentation time is 15 minutes. The conference will be held in person, it is not possible to participate remotely. The best papers will be published after the conference in the Artes Magazine. We accept applications with abstracts up to 250 characters until March 24, 2024 using the application form.
