W każdym też okresie twardy rdzeń ortodoksji otacza malowniczy pas filozoficznej cyganerii – oryginałów i odmieńców skłonnych do intelektualnej dezynwoltury.

Invitation

Members of the Philosophical Section at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Psychology at Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa have the pleasure to invite you to the conference entitled

Apocryphidity (in) Philosophy. Not / Anti / Beyond Orthodox Philosophical Discourses

to be held on 29-30 September, 2016 at Jan Dlugosz University in Częstochowa

In philosophy, as in any human activity, there are those who do not want to or cannot walk in a neat row. Their fate is uncertain. Only very few will face the eternal fame of rebels in a good cause who opposed the ossified traditions and directed their philosophical thought onto new, fertile lands. In the shadow of this small pantheon there stands a forgotten or scarcely known remaining part of outsiders, courageously facing the intellectual establishment of their time, those who were exiles, were exposed to ostracism, voluntary spiritual emigration, administrative harassment, conspiracy of silence and so on.

There are even more of those who would express their philosophical disobedience in a cautious manner, wisely balancing their rebellious thought over a narrow strip of a no-man's-land between the permitted and the prohibited. There is also a large number of peaceful dissenters and individuals who – feeling badly in the mainstream trend – are choosing the fate of lone steppe wolves and practise philosophy on their own on its deserted outskirts. In every period the hard core of orthodoxy is surrounded by a picturesque strip of philosophical bohemian writers – originals and misfits prone to intellectual carelessness. Finally, on the very outskirts of the mental nonconformism there is a controversial subgroup of scribblers, apparent innovators and dilettante pseudo explorers who  try to adorn their intellectual misery with garments of incomprehensible martyrs of truth.

We would like to arouse your interest in the part of the intellectual creation which is on the sidelines and which is a complementary complement to the textbooks on the history of philosophy. As the tool for organizing the world of philosophical otherness, we suggest to resort to a slightly developed ancient dichotomy of the canon and apocrypha. This heuristically tried-and-tested opposition allows us, on the plane of the content relationship between the ideas, to diversify and prioritize both the rebellious thought as well as the one that goes its own way. The apocryphal works, i.e. the ones that do not fall within their own scientific canons, were not included into them for various substantially diverse reasons. They can be presented and calibrated on the surface designated by two vertical axes. The first axis represents the "distance" and the radicalism of the diversion of an apocryphal work from the assumptions of the current canon: ranging from small contributory "deviations", through serious counterproposals, to the rebellious overt heresy. The second axis is organized by the diversity of the "power of argument" (difficult to estimate outside the frames of history) that justifies the content which goes beyond the canon: ranging from the pseudoscientific  stratagems, through fairly well-established arguments, to the genius of the new path of thinking.

You are all welcome to participate in our project.
