"The Postcolonial Family" International Conference

MINIONA -

Collegium Maius UMK
Częstochowa, ul. Zbierskiego 2/4

The aim of the upcoming interdisciplinary conference is to provide a space for a discussion of the ways in which families function within (post)colonial reality. It will be a unique opportunity to reflect upon and examine the changes not only in the families themselves, but also in social and academic approaches, and attitudes to them.

The conference organisers extend their invitation to scholars who are willing to explore the connection between postcolonial theory and family. Academics representing different fields, including but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnography, psychology, and political sciences, are welcomed to make their contributions to the discussion. The list of suggested fields includes the following, but is not limited to:

  • families in the history of colonisation
  • families in the former colonies
  • the role of families in diasporic communities
  • the political and social situation of immigrant and refugee families
  • cultural hybridity through family lens
  • secrets, silences, and memories in immigrant families
  • gender roles in immigrant families
  • the impact of immigration on families and their structure
  • motherhood, fatherhood, and intergenerational relations
  • cultural and literary representations of families
  • familial metaphors of empires and nations

Proposal for papers (20-minute presentations followed by 10-minute discussions) of no more than 300 words should be sent by 1 June 2018 to postcolonialfamily@gmail.com and include the following elements: the name of the author, their academic title, affiliation, the title of the presentation, and between 3 to 5 keywords.
