Comparative Methodology in Religious Studies

—The issue of religion has been recently taken into consideration in the comparative perspective more and more often.  It goes along with a growing awareness of cultural and religious plurality as well as of the importance of religion in terms of its role in social and political processes in the contemporary world.

—During the seminar we will discuss variety of methods applied in the comparative study of religion. We will consider which of them seem to be most beneficial or useful for better understanding of subject matter, and for capturing the uniqueness and divergence between Abrahamic, Indian (Dharmic), Taoic and other religious traditions. Some clear criteria for proper comparison in the field of religion should be defined and justified during our discussion.

—We will take into account both sociological context of the analysis and philosophical consideration of the most fundamental questions in comparative methodology.

Each speaker will present a paper (30 min) followed by a respondent’s comment and discussion (15 min). The concluding session of the seminar will be a round table debate. A draft version of the paper is required by April 30th, 2013.
The edited and reviewed papers presented during the Seminar will be published in a thematic volume of the Argument: Biannual Philosophical Journal.
