We would like to invite M.A. and Ph.D. students interested in the above topic to participate in the conference organized by the “Texts and Codes” Student Society at the Institute of English Studies, University of Lodz.

This interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary conference invites an exploration of the concept of “animal” and images of animals in the mind, in language, literature, culture, and art.

The contributions may concern (but are not limited to) any aspect of the following topics:

-Animal imagery in advertising/the media, comics, cartoons, memes etc.
-Communicating with animals

-Metaphors: Personification of animals, animalization of humans
-The animal-human relationship: the pet

-Symbolic animals: in literature art, rituals, proverbs

-The mythic/hybrid animals
-The call of the wild/Animals as entertainment: zoos, circuses, rodeos

Please submit abstracts of 200-300 words to the organizers at textscodes@gmail.com with the registration form (below). The submission deadline is 25 March 2014.

The languages of the conference will be English and Polish. The presentations should not exceed 30 minutes, including demonstrations, questions and discussion.

The conference venue: Institute of English Studies, al. Kościuszki 65.

There is no conference fee.
