Past / Present: Temporal Currents in North American Literature and Culture is the
tenth conference organized by the United Students Society, an extracurricular reading
group under the auspices of the Department of North American Literature and Culture at
the University of Łódź. The aim of the conference is to investigate cultural representations
of the past’s complex relationship with the present.


We invite undergraduate and graduate students (including doctoral candidates) to submit
abstracts related to US American and Canadian literature and culture that include, but
are not limited to, the following:


• anachronisms and atemporality
• hauntological perspectives
• anxieties of influence
• time-warps and time travel
• practices of commemoration and principled forgetting
• approaches to tradition and cultural heritage
• resistance to progress and change
• reevaluations and reinterpretations
• intergenerational relationships and conflicts
• memory and trauma
• visions of the past and predictions of the future
• influence of the past on the present
• importance of history in human experience


Please send an abstract of 150-200 words and a bio of 100 words to the

is October 1, 2021. Please note that there is no conference fee.
