Democracy can be considered as the most favourable political regime, as it is the only system which allows combination of the individual sense of freedom, obligations and responsibilities. Robert Dahl claimed that democracy, especially polyarchy was forged in a difficult process of evolution and achievement of a full democratic form of governing should be the aim of any country around the world. Lastly, we can quote Francis Fukuyama who in his major works argued that constitution of a modern democracy and spreading of this type of regime marked the ‘end of history’. Democracy is thus associated with a desirable ‘aim’ or ‘good’ that needs to be preserved, defended and promoted.

Today we know that Fukuyama’s predictions were overly optimistic and very many studies give grounds for a statement that ‘democracy’ is today one of the most controversial topic for political sciences. Studies conducted by Varieties of Democracy, World Value Study or European Social Survey organizations confirm that democracy means different things for people living in different cultures and socio-economic conditions. Consequently, democracy has become a ‘popular’ or ‘trendy’ term used by various regimes, parties and leaders to mask their true undemocratic views and actions (vide Russian Federation). Political initiatives like ACTA raised serious questions about limits of citizens’ rights and individual freedom when set against the agenda of international organizations and state governments in tracking personal data. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a major political crisis for western democracies manifested in demonstrations against lock-downs and pro-vaccine policies. The immigration crisis stimulated serious debates about social exclusion and inclusion. In all of those instances, the term ‘democracy’ was used to defend freedom of choice or freedom of beliefs – yet was/is such application valid?

If you are interested in discussing such topics as future of democracy, crisis of democracy, satisfaction with democracy, critique of democracy, quality of democracy and lastly the relation of democracy, responsibility and freedom, we would like to invite you to join us at the XXII edition of our student conference.
